Madison County agencies supporting people with disabilities are collaborating to celebrate the Americans with Disabilities Act in a big way this year. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, also known as the ADA (42 U.S.C. § 12101), is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on disability. It offers protections similar to those established by the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on race, religion, sex, national origin, and other characteristics. This was later expanded to include protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The Arc Madison Cortland, the Oneida YMCA, Heritage Farm, Madison County Office for the Aging, Madison Motivators, NYSED, ARISE, and a host of other community agencies unite every year to promote the ADA and raise awareness about the advocacy needed to educate the public. This year’s event will be held outside the Madison County Courthouse on Friday, July 25th at 10:00 a.m., with proclamations signed and read by city, county, and state elected officials in support of these efforts, followed by a short walk-in front of the county office buildings and featuring special guest Loretta Claiborne. Kevin Williams from The Arc Madison Cortland will serve as the emcee. The event is free and open to the public.
